MobileCoin is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency designed to make digital cash transactions easier and faster on mobile devices. It provides a peer-to-peer payment network that enables users to send and receive funds with privacy protection and near-instant speed. The MobileCoin protocol also provides a secure key management system and the ability to recover keys with a recovery PIN.
MobileCoin was founded in 2017 by Josh Goldbard and Shane Glynn. The company is based in San Francisco, CA and is venture-backed. The MobileCoin protocol was open-sourced by the MobileCoin Foundation in April 2020 and the network went live on December 7, 2020.
MobileCoin can be used to send and receive funds through the MobileCoin network. The Signal encrypted communications app recently announced the integration of MobileCoin payments into the app, allowing users to send money to one another privately. Currently, this feature is only available for beta-testing in the UK for iOS and Android users. To use MobileCoin, you need to have a MobileCoin wallet and MOB, MobileCoin's token. The token can be purchased on their website. The MobileCoin network uses the Stellar Consensus Protocol and all 250 million MOB were created in the genesis block. The circulating supply of MOB is not publicly available but the CEO of MobileCoin has stated that more than 50% of the supply will be available for purchase through their website in the near future.
