Moonriver (MOVR) is a smart contract platform that operates as a parachain on the Kusama network. It is designed to be compatible with Ethereum, offering a full Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) implementation, a Web3-compatible API, and bridges that connect Moonriver to existing Ethereum networks. This compatibility allows developers to deploy existing Solidity smart contracts and DApp frontends to Moonriver with minimal changes. Moonriver is intended as a companion network to Moonbeam, serving as a canary network where new code is deployed first for testing under real economic conditions before being shipped to Moonbeam on Polkadot.
The MOVR token, the native utility token of Moonriver, has several key functions:
Gas Metering: MOVR tokens are used for gas metering of smart contract execution.Node Infrastructure Incentivization: The token incentivizes collators and supports the mechanics of creating a decentralized node infrastructure necessary for the platform's operation.On-chain Governance: MOVR is used in the on-chain governance mechanism, which includes proposing referenda, electing council members, and voting.Transaction Fees: It is used to pay for network transaction fees.Moonriver's network and its tokenomics are designed to support these functions, ensuring the smooth operation and governance of the platform.
Moonriver was created by the Moonbeam Foundation, a part of the larger Moonbeam Network, founded by Derek Yoo. The Foundation focuses on developing Moonriver as an Ethereum-compatible blockchain environment on the Kusama network. The network was launched in June 2021 and then went live in January 2022. It is developed and maintained as a community-led initiative, with the majority of MOVR tokens held by community members, giving them significant control over the network's direction.
